NRHS SETS NEW AMA NATIONAL RECORD AT THE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS: 213.193 MPH!
At the International Speed Trials by Bub held September 3-7, 2006, NRHS set a new 1650cc MPS-PF record with a two way average speed of 213.193 miles per hour. The team's fastest one way pass for the event was an astonishing 217.945 miles per hour.
Piloting the specially prepared 1995 Buell S2 Thunderbolt motorcycle was veteran Bonneville racer Timbo Horton, of Lakewood, California. One of only 30 members of the prestigious Bonneville 200mph club to achieve that status on two wheels, Timbo has broken numerous Bonneville records in the past. He has been riding for NRHS since 2004.
"The bike felt rock solid at speed, and the faster it went, the more stable it felt" commented Timbo after his fastest pass. Crew Chief and bike builder Aaron Wilson of Berthoud, Colorado, credits the bike's high speed stability to the bodywork. "We started with a 1987 Buell RR1000 body, the most aerodynamic production bodywork ever offered on a motorcycle" says Aaron. "Then team member Jim Bantz, of Hartford City Indiana, made special modifications to make it fit the S2 Thunderbolt chassis and enhance the already superb aerodynamics."
Powering the Buell S2 Thunderbolt is a specially built 1650cc engine burning a mixture of methanol and nitromethane. "This motor has all the best stuff in it" commented Jon Kraushaar, NRHS machinist and head porter. "Bonneville motors are a little different than drag race motors. We have to make very high power levels for miles at a time, and then turn around and do it again, over and over. Even using the best parts available, it's a balancing act between power and longevity."
NRHS co-owner and president Daniel Dunn is optimistic the bike can go much faster. "Our season was cut short by bad weather" says Daniel. "We had a great event, but we see the potential to take this bike north of 220 miles per hour, and possibly over 230."
